Use the Maurice Road Entrance When: Starting Sunday 30th Jan and continuing throughout the year on the Last Sunday of the month A Jaguar featuring in the Wellsford Warkworth Vintage Car Club Daffodil Rally later this month will always hold a special place in the heart of Warkworth resident Frances Ross.
The Mark 2 Jag, built in 1968, was bought by Frances’ late husband, Robin, to further his long-standing interest in classic cars during his retirement. He stripped the car down and was about to get it repainted, from the original cream colour to a vibrant red, when he was suddenly and unexpectedly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and told he had just six weeks to live. Frances says the prognosis was shattering, especially as Robin, then 75, appeared fit and healthy. “He was the sort of man who could have erected a fence without any trouble. All that seemed to be bothering him was a pain in the shoulder, which we thought was simply an old rugby injury coming to the surface again,” Frances says. Sadly, it was far more serious. Robin’s health rapidly deteriorated, but despite the doctors’ dire predictions he managed to cling on to life for another six months. Frances, 75, says it was during these difficult months that members of the Wellsford Warkworth Vintage Car Club rallied around to help Robin rebuild his car. The classic saloon went on to win the Wellsford Warkworth club’s award for Best Reconstructed Car of 2012, and in March the following year Robin and Frances entered it in a club rally, “Are we there yet?”, and won. The following month Robin died. Frances says the car serves as a reminder of all the support she received from club members during her husband’s last days. “And I still get that support. That’s why I still have confidence to drive the car in rallies, because I know if I get into trouble, the men of the club will be there to help me straight away.” She has the car serviced at two local garages and insists they remedy problems straight away, rather than leaving it until the next Warrant of Fitness. “I have complete faith in the car and the boys’ workmanship so there’s every reason for me to keep driving it,” she says. The Wellsford Warkworth Vintage Car Club Daffodil Rally takes place on Sunday, August 25. Cars will leave Smales Farm, Takapuna, at 11.15am, and start to arrive at Warkworth Wharf around noon. Visitors will be invited to vote for their favourite cars and prizes will be awarded to winners. Money raised during the event will support the Cancer Society in its efforts to reduce the incidence and impact of cancer. Zone 2 memorial run this Sunday, leaving from the Mid West breakfast at 10 am and heading back to the Hobsonville RSA.
This year the Auckland Hot Rod Club, Wheels Inc and Tamaki Rod and Custom Club are the combined hosts, our club needs to support this as other clubs have come along when we have been hosting it. It is to remember hot rodders who are no longer with us, and also to have a catch up with other clubs and chat with them. A txt will be sent out regarding times for meeting up, you can meet up it the hot rod breakfast in west Auckland, where most cars will be leaving from around 10 am, but you can if you wish just meet up in Orewa and head over to where it is being held, at the Hobsonville RSA, on the old Hobsonville Rd, this is a sanctioned event so if you need to get log books signed you can do it here. There will be a $20 buffet lunch and refreshments are available, also there will be raffles to raise money for the Heart Foundation. Hobsonville RSA. Sunday Sep 1st (Father’s Day), for those not going down to the Father’s Day drags, there is a car display at Browns Bay New World. 11th SEPTEMBER Club night at probably, Sugar Loaf in Waiwera, this to be confirmed, meeting starts at 7.30 pm, food and drink available and bring some coinage for fines, if you think you are going to fined. 15th SEPTEMBER Whangaparaoa Beach Hop MYSTERY RUN FOR PROSTATE CANCER SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15th MEET AT SHARKS AT 10.30 AM LEAVING AROUND 11 AM You need to wear something blue, the more blue, the more points, it is a $15 entry per car, or more if you wish, there will be prizes, a bit of fun along the way, and we will be having a bbq at the finish. This is an important thing for men, so please get in and support it, the more cars the better, don’t forget to bring a pen, a sense of humour and wear something blue. I would appreciate it if you can let me know by the next club night if you are coming so food can be organised. For more information call Dave Swan on 021614133 28th SEPTEMBER ANNUAL PRIZEGIVING Saturday, September 28 at the Country Club, from 6 pm dress up theme is Movie or Music Stars! This is the night where you can let your hair down, if you still have it . . . LOL . . . get into the theme of things, be inventive, food is available and there will be music, of course, and it’s a good night to catch up with other club members. Last year it was a great night so this time it should be just as good, if not better. So come on all you Rodders, get your thinking caps on and come as something, interesting. OCTOBER 2019 DECEMBER 2019 The Orewa New World Christmas Party was held on November 21st, yet another great turnout of cars, was a pity that the weather wasn't that great, but that is one thing that can’t be predicted! Looking at all the people watching the parade and from the feedback of Destination Orewa. It was still a great success and we also won the best non-commercial float again! Our club was invited out to Ken’s Shed in Kumeu to be featured on the Hot Rod Show, most people were really keen to come along to participate in the day’s event. There was a great selection of cars and everyone had a great day watching the filming and there were 3 cars selected to be featured for the filming, the selection was done by the producer of the show, so even though not all the cars were selected everyone had a good day out, watching the filming and having a nice cruise from Orewa to Kumeu. |
